creativity, sensuality & relationships
Have you ever considered the connection between sensual energy and creative expression? Have you ever thought about the impact those might have on your relationships to friends, partners, family or yourself?
Sensuality is a very subtle way of connecting to your senses and surroundings. And it’s the pathway to being creative.
Creative people allow themselves to experience relationships fuller, deeper and with more vulnerability and trust. The most primal desire to feel and connect with others and ourselves is often confused with sexuality. Don’t get me wrong- being sexual is in our nature and so incredibly important. But it’s not what I’m talking about today. To be sensual means to observe and let sensations wash over you like honey. To be sensual means you are aware of what it feels like to touch, see, taste, smell, hear all the things around you and soak in the sensations you enjoy with gratitude and softness.
To be in tune with your sensuality, means you’re in tune with yourself. And to be aligned with your truest self means you can express yourself creatively. You’ll have wonderful ideas to spice up your relationships, solve problems, be innovative, have an open mind and try/learn new things. You can cultivate intimacy and trust with friends and partners and be the most authentic version of yourself without the bittersweet aftertaste of guilt, shame or doubt.
Here’s my Top 10 ways to be more sensual and/or express myself creatively:
MOVEMENT: I move my body intuitively. Most of the time, my own Yoga practice is nothing like the one I teach. It’s either extremely slow or incredibly chaotic as I dance from Asana to Asana without any structure or plan.
And I dance. I dance at home with headphones int he dark or take any chance I get to go to epic ecstatic dances. There I’d dance by myself or find a partner for contact improv- a great way to connect energies and practice mindful movements.SOUND: I listen to calming music with uplifting or meaningful lyrics or sing for myself and in community when chanting mantras. I use my voice and it feels SO good to allow for it to be whatever it is unfolding into in the moment.
WORDS: I journal/ process my emotions and experiences in poetry or enjoy poetry of different artist/ a great book
ART: I started painting. Not because I think I have a hidden talent but because the way the brush strokes over the canvas and leaves colourful marks feels so soothing. I don’t care how the results look, I just enjoy the process
TASTE: I cook (whole foods) and savor every bite as if my tastebuds are holding a ceremony for all the flavours and textures.
NATURE: Here’s my favourite ways to enjoy pachamama in all her glory:
- Nightwalks. I used to do that almost every night after dinner. Requirements are to go a) slowly b) quietly and c) in the dark (as the name might indicate)
- Hiking/ Trail running with breaks to soak in the views
- Mountain Biking to feel the wind on my skin
- No shoes on grass or in sand
- Soaking in the Ocean or a beautiful Lake (I prefer hot springs and warm waters- I’m not the best cold plunger either, hihi)TOUCH: I go to massage therapists and other body workers or give myself a massage. Touch is so incredibly important to me and self care obviously, too. Holding hands or hugging my partner/ close friends makes me feel so connected to them and allows me to feel safe and supported.
SCENT: I use essential oils, sage or palo Santo when moving, dancing, painting or writing. My smell is super heightened so I can not stand any sort of artificial fragrance (perfume, hairspray, nail polish, etc.)
VISION: The light in my apartment is always dimmed and soft. I have extremely sensitive eyes and bright light often overstimulates me.
